Preparing for a blood test
Rules for patient preparation for laboratory tests
A complete blood count and biochemical tests are performed on an empty stomach, at least 12 hours after the last meal.
- 1–2 days before the test, avoid fatty and fried foods.
- the evening before, have a light dinner and get adequate rest.
- on the day of the test, do not eat breakfast (including tea, coffee, or juice), avoid physical activity, do not take medications, and refrain from smoking.
- drinking water does not affect blood test results, so you may drink water.
We recommend having all tests done in the morning, as blood values change significantly during the day and reference ranges are based on morning samples.
Before thyroid blood tests: it is recommended to have the TSH test done in the morning between 9:00 and 12:00.
If you are taking thyroid medication, ensure there is at least a 4-hour gap between taking the tablet and giving the blood sample.
